Only Three

It is shown that it is possible to account for all the experimental indications for neutrino oscillations with just three flavours. In particular we suggest that the atmospheric neutrino anomaly and the LSND result can be explained by the same mass difference and mixing. Possible implications and future test of the resulting mass and mixing pattern are given. [email protected] S...

Three Consecutive Almost Squares

Given a positive integer n, we let sfp(n) denote the squarefree part of n. We determine all positive integers n for which max{sfp(n), sfp(n+ 1), sfp(n+ 2)} ≤ 150 by relating the problem to finding integral points on elliptic curves. We also prove that there are infinitely many n for which max{sfp(n), sfp(n + 1), sfp(n + 2)} < n.

Finite groups with three relative commutativity degrees

‎‎For a finite group $G$ and a subgroup $H$ of $G$‎, ‎the relative commutativity degree of $H$ in $G$‎, ‎denoted by $d(H,G)$‎, ‎is the probability that an element of $H$ commutes with an element of $G$‎. ‎Let $mathcal{D}(G)={d(H,G):Hleq G}$ be the set of all relative commutativity degrees of subgroups of $G$‎. ‎It is shown that a finite group $G$ admits three relative commutativity degrees if a...

Squares with Three Nonzero Digits

We determine all integers n such that n2 has at most three base-q digits for q ∈ {2, 3, 4, 5, 8, 16}. More generally, we show that all solutions to equations of the shape Y 2 = t + M · q + N · q, where q is an odd prime, n > m > 0 and t2, |M |, N < q, either arise from “obvious” polynomial families or satisfy m ≤ 3. Our arguments rely upon Padé approximants to the binomial function, considered ...

On Sums of Three Squares

(1) r3(n) = 4πn S3(n), where the singular series S3(n) is given by (16) with Q = ∞. While in principle this exact formula can be used to answer almost any question concerning r3(n), the ensuing calculations can be tricky because of the slow convergence of the singular series S3(n). Thus, one often sidesteps (1) and attacks problems involving r3(n) directly. For example, concerning the mean valu...
